Today’s crypto markets were shaped by a surprise rise in US producer prices that coincided with a pullback in Bitcoin, large derivatives liquidations and a series of industry developments from hardware wallet news to payments and regulatory changes.

Producer inflation lifts volatility

US producer prices rose 1.3% in September, the largest monthly increase since March 2022, taking the annual PPI to 6.3%, above the 5.5% forecast. A sizable component of the move was a 20.3% surge in gasoline prices. That data reintroduced volatility into risk markets and coincided with a sell-off in crypto derivatives.

Bitcoin tests $80,000 as liquidations mount

Bitcoin fell below $80,000 for the first time in more than a month, touching a low of $79,711 before recovering toward $80,925. Nearly $1 billion in positions were liquidated during the move. The single largest recorded liquidation was a $12.03 million long on Binance. On-chain analytics firm Glassnode flagged the $80,000 level as a key price area during the price action.

Ledger unveils Atom, a hardware wallet with Android apps

Ledger introduced the Atom, a device that combines a crypto wallet with Android applications while keeping apps separate from the wallet’s sensitive functions. The company said the device is designed to detect tampering even when powered off and that its protections would block implanted hardware used in some reported incidents in Asia. Ledger positioned the product as not being a response to a single isolated event. Pre-orders are priced at $849, rising to $899 after launch, with shipments scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027.

HEX plunges after founder arrested

The HEX token dropped nearly 30% in 24 hours to $0.0006, wiping about $160 million from its market cap and taking valuation from over $500 million to roughly $340 million. The decline followed reports that HEX founder Richard Heart had been arrested in Istanbul. Nearly two years earlier Interpol had issued a Red Notice for Heart at Finland’s request over alleged tax evasion and assault. Separately, the SEC stated in April 2025 that it would not refile its lawsuit.

Mastercard and BVNK launch Global Money Platform

Mastercard and BVNK announced the Global Money Platform, the first major integration after Mastercard’s $1.8 billion acquisition of BVNK. The platform provides an API enabling banks and fintech firms to offer accounts where fiat and stablecoins coexist, with instant conversion and cards linked to stablecoins. BVNK made the platform available with initial partners including Nuvei and Marqeta. Mastercard said the roadmap includes features described as “agentic commerce” and tokenized deposits. For context, stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value relative to a fiat currency.

Russia confirms ban on person-to-person crypto transfers

The Bank of Russia confirmed that direct peer-to-peer crypto transactions between individuals without an intermediary will be prohibited starting July 1, 2027. Existing restrictions remain in place: transfers from digital accounts to self-custody wallets are still banned, and crypto cannot be used to pay for goods. Industry executives cautioned that enforcing a ban on direct person-to-person transfers could be challenging.

Day in brief

Today’s headlines linked a renewed inflation surprise to market volatility as Bitcoin revisited the $80,000 area and saw substantial derivatives liquidations. At the same time, product innovation and payments infrastructure advanced with Ledger’s Atom and Mastercard’s Global Money Platform, while regulatory tightening in Russia highlighted contrasting global pressures on crypto activity.
