Today’s crypto headlines focused on infrastructure changes and security planning: Solana set a firm date for a major consensus upgrade, Coinbase pushed for a move to quantum-resistant Bitcoin signatures, and Ripple continued work on AI-related payments as tracked activity from AI agents surged. Market and regulatory developments also featured, including Bitcoin’s advance and a reported arrest of a high-profile founder.
Solana schedules Alpenglow upgrade for October 21
Anza and the Solana Foundation confirmed that the Alpenglow upgrade will activate on mainnet on October 21 during epoch 1064, at approximately 15:00 UTC. The upgrade replaces Solana’s TowerBFT system with a new voting design called Votor, intended to cut target transaction finalization time from 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds. The project team cautions that the 150 millisecond figure is a target, not a guaranteed outcome. Because Votor removes votes from blocks, on-chain TPS (transactions per second) figures reported by some metrics will fall even though actual network activity is expected to remain unchanged. A later phase, named Rotor, is planned for a future date that has not yet been determined.
Coinbase urges move to quantum-resistant Bitcoin cryptography
Coinbase, which holds about 5% of all Bitcoin, publicly urged developers to begin transitioning Bitcoin to quantum-resistant cryptography now, warning that consensus changes and an ecosystem-wide migration could take years. The firm recommended a flexible approach similar to BIP-360: a 1-of-2 hybrid design that combines classical and quantum-resistant signatures while remaining compatible with the multi-party computation systems used by custodians. Coinbase noted that dormant or lost coins, including those from the Satoshi era, create additional governance questions in any migration.
AI agents, Chainalysis tracking and Ripple’s XRPL integrations
Chainalysis reported more than 138 million payments made by AI agents using Coinbase’s "x402" protocol on the Base network, up from roughly 1,500 in mid-2025. Identifiable payments for AI inference were overwhelmingly US-based wallets (88.1%), with China accounting for 0.1%. TRM warned that some of the reported activity may be automated scripts rather than genuine AI agents. Separately, Ripple is integrating Stripe’s Privy wallets into the XRP Ledger (XRPL). The XRPL AI Hub shows 14.3 million transactions, 169 merchants, and recorded totals around 6,991 XRP and 12,752 RLUSD for the hub to date.
Market moves and macro watchers
Bitcoin rose 1.5% to nearly $83,900 after comments by John Williams of the New York Fed. Williams said he sees no need for further interest rate hikes in 2027, while noting that one more increase this year might be appropriate. Market breadth included Zcash leading gains at nearly 7%, with Solana and Dogecoin up about 2.5% and Ethereum rising 2%. Investors are watching Thursday’s inflation report for clues on whether Bitcoin will retest the $85,000 level.
Report of Richard Heart’s arrest in Istanbul
Turkish media reported the arrest in Istanbul of Richard Heart, founder of Hex, and his wife, citing an Interpol Red Notice issued in 2024 at Finland’s request over alleged tax evasion and assault. Reports said cash, mobile devices, jewelry and weapons were seized. There has been no official confirmation from authorities in those reports. Heart has not been convicted; the US SEC’s lawsuit against him was dismissed in 2025.
The day in brief, infrastructure, security and macro drivers
Taken together, today’s items underline three recurring themes in the sector: protocol upgrades aimed at speed and efficiency, preemptive security work to address emerging risks like quantum attacks, and the growing role of machine-to-machine payments in crypto rails. At the same time, regulatory and macroeconomic developments, arrests and inflation data, continue to shape markets and project timetables.
