Today's crypto news covered continued corporate treasury accumulation of major tokens, JPMorgan extending its JPM Coin onto the Ethereum ecosystem for institutional use, France voting to tax certain stablecoin exchanges, and Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson announcing he is developing a new programming language for the network.

Corporate treasuries keep accumulating BTC and ETH

Multiple corporate treasury programs reported fresh purchases over the week of October 12-18, 2026. Strategy purchased 267 BTC for $22.1 million between October 12 and October 18 at an average price of $82,900, bringing its total holdings to 848,517 BTC. The company also repurchased $193.1 million of its own STRC shares and increased its buyback program from $2 billion to $3 billion.

Strive acquired 4,045 BTC between October 12 and 16 at an average price of about $82,803, a purchase valued at roughly $335 million that raised its treasury to 36,818 BTC. Separately, Strive priced an issuance of 15% preferred shares (SATS) valued at approximately $630 million, with settlement scheduled for October 20.

Tom Lee’s BitMine added 12,535 Ethereum, worth roughly $30 million, bringing its total to 6,041,481 ETH, equivalent to 4.9% of the total supply. That total approaches a previously stated 5% target at which Lee has said purchases would stop. The summary note also flagged a forthcoming MSCI rule finalized on October 15 that may exclude 'non-operating companies' from its indices effective at market close on November 30.

JPM Coin now available on Ethereum

JPMorgan has extended JPM Coin to the Ethereum blockchain for institutional clients, according to a report dated October 19, 2026. JPM Coin functions as a deposit token where each unit represents a dollar held in a bank account; tokens are redeemable at any time and are available only to approved counterparties. The token was first launched on Base in November 2025 and can now be moved between Base and Ethereum with settlement in seconds, seven days a week.

The bank expects institutional uses such as payments by crypto companies, settlement of transactions in tokenized assets, and use as collateral. A JPMorgan unit called Kinexys was reported to have processed over $4 trillion to date, averaging about $7 billion per day.

France approves tax on certain stablecoin exchanges

On October 16, 2026 France’s National Assembly approved amendment I-3898 by a narrow margin, 38 votes in favor, 37 against, and 25 abstentions, which would make some crypto-to-stablecoin exchanges taxable beginning in 2027, even if no conversion into fiat occurs. The amendment originated as committee amendment I-CF1826 proposed by MP Nicolas Sansu and was approved on October 7.

On the same day lawmakers rejected a separate proposal to allow the carry-forward of crypto-related losses over a 10-year period, with 18 votes in favor, 75 against and 3 abstentions. The first vote on the 2027 budget was scheduled for October 20; items under consideration included expanding the 'exit tax' to portfolios over €800,000 and a requirement to declare self-custodial wallets with balances above €100,000.

Charles Hoskinson announces a new Cardano programming language

On October 18, 2026 Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson announced on X that he is personally developing a new programming language for the Cardano network in collaboration with Lucas Rosa, an Input Output Global engineer and co-creator of Aiken, a smart contract language for Cardano. Hoskinson said the language will support transaction intents, proof-carrying data, and Groth16 proofs to link transaction requests to cryptographic proofs.

Hoskinson did not disclose a name for the new language, nor published code or a release date for developers.

What this cluster of stories indicates

The day’s headlines show continued institutional interest in on-chain dollars and in building treasury exposures to major tokens, alongside regulatory moves to capture taxable events in Europe and ongoing development work at major protocol teams. Together they reflect concurrent pressures: market participants extending on-chain utility for bank-issued dollars, corporates increasing crypto holdings, and governments and protocol founders adjusting frameworks and tooling around those flows.
